Description Patrolmen arrived on the compound of the Marion Correctional Institute and formed a guard around a field just outside the prison. According to a retired officer who served as assistant post commander of the Marion Post at the time, there were more than 300 officers, each armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, watching the prisoners' every move.
