The Baybridge Post (now Sandusky Post) in the Bucyrus District (northern, central Ohio) saw activity unique to the area. For instance, there was a boat docked at the back of the post for use in watercraft patrol and rescue.
Retired Lieutenant David Cope recalls both the Baybridge and Sandusky posts, as his career spanned the time from his graduation with the 100th Academy Class in 1977 to his retirement in 2004.
Among some of his recollections are using Patrol cars without air conditioning and having to wear long sleeved uniforms and felt Stetson hats, even in summertime; times before portable radio, which meant that officers had to return to their cars to radio information into a post; and a case of distracted driving that caused an officer to end the post's record of the longest period without a Patrol car crash.
Also included in this exhibit are two photos of the building that served from 1949-1964 as the Baybridge Post. The building, located on the east side of the Bay Bridge, still stands and served for a time as offices for the Village of Bay View, Ohio, in Erie County. |
