| A Highway Patrol Police Officer provides general police services and enforces appropriate laws, rules, regulations, and procedures at select state facilities in Columbus, Ohio. Officers assist in the apprehension and arrest of criminal violators, conduct investigations of suspicious persons and incidents, and assist the public whenever needed. |
Pre-Qualifications
• You must be a U.S. Citizen
• Have a valid driver’s license
• Be at least 21 years of age
• Have a high school diploma or G.E.D.What does a Highway Patrol Officer do?
The Ohio State Highway Patrol Police Officer is responsible for police services and security at state facilities such as the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, the State Fairgrounds, and the Department of Public Safety Complex. To accomplish this task, Police Officers investigate potential criminal activities which may pose a threat to others, investigate crashes, monitor persons entering and leaving the premises, conduct safety inspections, and secure facilities during non-business hours. Police Officers also respond to emergency situations where they may have to provide first aid, protect and assist visitors, and assist in handling, restraining, and transporting criminal violators.
Training
Police Officers who are not OPOTA certified, will go through 16 weeks of training at the State Highway Patrol Academy in Columbus. Those selected for training will be required to live at the Academy with room and board furnished. During this training period, officers will receive their regular salary. While at the Academy, you will receive extensive training in military demeanor, Ohio laws and statutes, misdemeanor and felony arrest techniques, human relations, crash investigation, firearms and ballistics, testifying in court, narcotics, physical training, defensive driving and patrol techniques, and civil disorders.

With this application, you will be given detailed instructions pertaining to the written and physical tests you must complete prior to acceptance.
