Junior Cadet Week

Jointly sponsored by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Auxiliary, the Ohio American Legion and the Ohio American Legion Auxiliary, the Junior Cadet program provides young men and women with an interest in law enforcement insight into the issues peace officers face in their jobs. Junior Cadet Week 2009 was June 22-26.

During their time at the Academy, the teens experienced aspects of the same training as an Ohio State Trooper. The week included daily physical training, military drill, firearms training, officer-violator contacts, self-defense tactics, canine and criminal patrol operations and crash investigation. Junior Cadet Week is a one-time opportunity available only to Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State attendees during the year of their participation in those programs. Children of Patrol employees are also eligible.

Six of the junior cadets were related to Patrol employees:

Spencer Groves--Lt. Mark Groves (Aviation), father
Christopher Johnson--Sgt. Christopher Johnson (Recruitment), father
Sarah Maffitt-- Glen Maffitt, MCE (Warren), father
Christopher Shouse--Sgt. Randy McElfresh (Batavia), step uncle
