Wearing proper equipment is part of safe motorcycling

COLUMBUS – Protective safety equipment serves three purposes for motorcyclists: comfort and protection from the elements; injury protection; and through use of color or reflective material, a means for increased visibility by other motorists.

To help make it a safe and enjoyable motorcycle riding season, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is providing an 11-part series of motorcycle safety tips from the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) as part of our Ride Smart. Drive Smart. partnership. Part seven of our series provides basic information on motorcycle safety equipment:

Helmet: This is the most important piece of equipment. To be as safe as possible, adult motorcyclists and passengers are encouraged to wear a helmet. Ohio law requires helmet use for all motorcyclists, and their passengers, who are under age 18 or those holding a motorcycle operator’s license with a “novice” endorsement. Safety helmets save lives by preventing or reducing the extent of head injuries in the event of a crash.
Eye Protection: Since many motorcycles don't have windshields, riders must protect their eyes against insects, dirt, rocks, or other airborne matter. Even the wind can cause the eyes to tear and blur vision, and good vision is imperative when riding. Choose quality goggles, glasses with plastic or safety lenses, or a helmet equipped with a face shield.
Jackets and Trousers: Jackets and trousers should be made of heavy-weight, durable material like leather or denim.
Gloves: Durable gloves should be a non-slip type to permit a firm grip on the controls.
Make yourself visible: Choose protective gear that will increase your visibility in addition to providing protection in the event of a crash. Wear bright colors that make you more visible, and if riding at night, wear clothing with reflective materials.
Ride Smart. Drive Smart. themes to help motorcyclists and other drivers share the road safely are:

1. Get Trained (including knowing proper safety gear to wear)/Get Licensed;
2. Stay Sober (incorporating the AMA’s national Ride Straight program); and
3. Other drivers, be aware by looking out for motorcyclists.
