Brake-related defects continue to be the most significant and frequent violations that safety inspectors discover during roadside inspections of commercial vehicles. In 2004, there were 8,720 brake-related out-of-service violations on commercial vehicles in Ohio resulting from inspections conducted by Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA)-certified inspectors.

To better educate commercial drivers on the importance of proper brake safety, the OSHP, in cooperation with the PUCO, Ohio Trucking Association, and TravelCenters of America, are partnering for Operation Air Brake; an ongoing, international effort dedicated to improving commercial vehicle brake safety throughout North America.

From Aug. 28 through Sept. 3, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily, at Ohio TravelCenters of America locations in London, Lodi, Toledo, and Youngstown, CVSA-certified inspectors from the OSHP and PUCO will be conducting free commercial vehicle brake safety inspections to educate commercial drivers on proper brake operation, and the need for properly maintained brakes. Drivers can also receive free brake adjustments from participating TravelCenters of America. Brake Safety Awareness Week is a safety education event, and no enforcement action will be taken.
