COLUMBUS – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding
motorists to use caution and plan for slow travel during forecasted severe
winter weather on Ohio roadways this weekend.
Unsafe speeds for condition and unsafe following distances contribute
to most of the crashes during inclement conditions. Troopers are advising
motorists to always keep safety as the first priority while traveling
in a motor vehicle. Injuries and fatalities can be prevented by drivers
and passengers securing themselves with safety belts and child safety
seats. During winter weather and holiday travel, increased attention to
safe driving techniques by avoiding distractions is also critical.

Greater following distances and slower speeds
are important in winter weather because icy roadways can triple stopping
distances. On ice or snow-covered roads, be sure to accelerate
slowly to prevent traction loss.

Slippery conditions may not always be readily
apparent. During freezing temperatures, reduce speeds with
the presence of any precipitation, as rain and light snow can quickly
turn to ice, particularly on bridges and overpasses. If your vehicle
begins to skid on ice, resist the temptation to apply the brakes. Instead,
take your foot off the gas pedal and steer into the direction of the
skid.

Always wear a safety belt to reduce the risk
of serious injury or death in a crash.

Plan Ahead. Keep a winter car kit
in your vehicle including: jumper cables; flares or roadway reflectors;
flashlight and extra batteries; windshield washer fluid; small shovel;
ice scraper; antifreeze; instant tire inflator; blankets; non-perishable
foods; candle; matches; "help" sign; a first-aid kit; and
dress warmly in case of long delays.

Take steps to avoid breakdowns. Follow
your vehicle manufacturer’s suggested maintenance schedule and
ensure the brakes and transmission are working properly. Regularly check
the wipers, tires, lights, fluid levels and apply lock lubricant to
prevent freezing.
