COLUMBUS - In anticipation of heavy traffic during the holiday weekend, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is urging motorists to contribute to roadway safety by planning ahead for increased drive time and making safety their first priority while driving.

"Many motorists will be traveling on Ohio roadways this holiday weekend. We need all motorists to drive safely while they share the road with others," Colonel Paul McClellan, Patrol superintendent, said. "Drivers must be aware of their surroundings; such as traffic volume, weather and road conditions, and the time of day they will be traveling. Extra troopers will be enforcing impaired driving, safety belt and aggressive driving violations. Enjoying your holiday starts by making sure you and your family are safe this holiday season."

The Patrol recommends that in the event of a vehicle breakdown, safely position the vehicle as far off the road as possible, open the hood, and turn on hazard warning lights. Place a "help" sign in the rear window and stay inside the vehicle until help arrives. If a cell phone is available, dial 1-877-7-PATROL for assistance and the call will be directed to the nearest Patrol post.

Troopers suggest all motorists have the following items in their vehicle in case of a breakdown:

• Cell phone
• Road flares or reflectors
• Help or Call Police signs
• First aid kit
• Flashlight
• Blanket/Sleeping bag
• Small shovel
• Bottled water and energy foods
• Candles
• Tow strap/chain

Last year during the holiday weekend, troopers assisted over 4,000 motorists on the roadways. Twelve people were killed in nine motor vehicle crashes; only three of the 12 people killed were wearing their safety belts at the time of the crash.
