Patrol aiming to improve commercial vehicle safety this week

CLEVELAND – Beginning today, and running through Friday, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and other area law enforcement officers are focusing increased attention on commercial vehicle safety across Interstate 90 in Cuyahoga County.

This week, officers will pay close attention to commercial vehicle safety in a variety of areas including: examination of the driver's commercial driver license (CDL) status, alcohol and drug impairment, driver fatigue, log book records, load security, hazardous materials violations, and other mechanical defects.

State troopers believe this type of focused attention will help make Cuyahoga County safer, and will help toward the Patrol’s goal of reducing serious injury and fatal crashes on Ohio roads.

Last year, Cuyahoga County led the state with 10 commercial vehicle-involved fatalities.

Special emphasis will be placed on violations known as Primary Collision Factors (PCF), such as speeding, following too closely, unsafe lane changes, and operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol (OVI). Involved agencies within Cuyahoga County enforce all of these laws on a daily basis. This week, there will be an increased enforcement of the PCF violations, stressing to the motoring public the connection between PCF violations and traffic collisions.

Joining the Patrol for this enforcement effort are officers from the Westlake, Cleveland, Euclid, and Bratenahl police departments.
