COLUMBUS – Motor Carrier Enforcement Inspectors from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Indiana State Police will participate in a Passenger-Carrying Commercial Vehicle enforcement effort tomorrow to try to reduce the number of highway crashes caused by mechanical defects on passenger-carrying commercial motor vehicles and driver errors related to fatigue and other human factors. The enforcement effort in Ohio will concentrate on destination inspections at King’s Island and Cedar Point amusement parks and will focus on passenger-carrying commercial motor vehicles.
Inspectors will focus on checking mechanical components such as brakes, tires, required lighting components as well as driver hours of service. During the safety inspection process inspectors will educate drivers on the importance of maintenance and safe operation of the passenger-carrying commercial motor vehicles and place unsafe vehicles out-of-service. Safety investigators from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio will conduct safety compliance reviews on Ohio-based passenger-carrying commercial carriers.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration sets minimum
safety standards that passenger-carrying commercial motor vehicle companies
must follow for the buses they operate and the physical qualifications
and operating rules for their drivers. The Patrol continues to work closely
with surrounding state law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of
commercial vehicle traffic.
