Highway Patrol graduates 65 cadets in ceremony today
Columbus - The Ohio State Highway Patrol held a graduation ceremony for 65 cadets today at the Patrol’s Training Academy.
The Patrol’s 151st Academy Class graduated today after 23 weeks of intense training. The keynote address was made by Governor John Kasich. Additional remarks were provided by Director Thomas P. Charles, Ohio Department of Public Safety; Colonel John Born, Patrol Superintendent; Captain Brigette Charles, Academy Commandant; Judge Peter B. Abele, Fourth Appellate District, Ohio Court of Appeals; and Reverend Richard D. Ellsworth, Ohio State Highway Patrol Chaplain. All addressed the graduates and presented their commissions and certificates of training.
Courses completed by the 151st class included Core Values, crash investigation, criminal and traffic law, detection of impaired drivers, firearms, physical fitness, and self-defense. The cadets also received training in motor vehicle operations.
Tpr. Justin N. Slusser of Harrod, Ohio, was selected as class speaker and thanked the Academy and cadet family members for being supportive during their training.
Four of the graduates received special honors for top performance in various fields of study at the Patrol Academy. The honorees are:
- Overall performance – Tpr. Randy T. Petit of Wooster, Ohio
- Top performance in academics – Tpr. Justin N. Slusser of Harrod, Ohio
- Top performance in driving – Tpr. Joshua T. Menke of Delphos, Ohio
- Top performance in firearms – Tpr. Justin N. Slusser of Harrod, Ohio
- Top performance in physical fitness – Tpr. Brandon M. Miller of Farmdale, Ohio
Additionally, the following cadets were recognized for their leadership. The honorees are: Tpr. Brandon M. Miller of Farmdale, Ohio; Tpr. Randy T. Petit of Marietta, Ohio; Tpr. Justin J. Ross of Millersburg, Ohio; Tpr. Justin N. Slusser of Harrod, Ohio; and Tpr. Michael D. Smith, Upper Sandusky, Ohio.
Each of the commissioned troopers will report to their posts on Monday, February 27. The graduates’ first 60 working days will be a field-training period under the guidance of a veteran officer. The new graduates are assigned to 20 of the Patrol’s 55 posts.
