Troopers seize $700,000 worth of cocaine during a Madison County traffic stop

Cocaine

WEST JEFFERSON – A man and a woman are facing felony drug charges after Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers seized more than 15 pounds of cocaine, worth approximately $700,000, at a traffic stop in Madison County.

Troopers stopped a 2016 Kia Sorento with Idaho registration for speed and following too closely violations on Interstate 70, near milepost 74, at 8:38 a.m. on August 1. Criminal indicators were observed and a Patrol drug-sniffing canine alerted to the vehicle. A probable cause search revealed the contraband.

The driver, Desiree Smith, 19, and passenger, Elijah Padilla, 19, both from Los Angeles, Calif., were incarcerated in the Multi-County Jail. They were charged with possession and trafficking in cocaine, both first-degree felonies.

If convicted, each could face up to 20 years in prison and up to a $40,000 fine.
