Vinton County man to receive Certificate of Recognition for his lifesaving actions

ATHENS, OHIO – The Ohio State Highway Patrol honored Dustin J. Ward today with a Certificate of Recognition for his lifesaving actions on September 12, 2016. Captain Carl Roark, Jackson District commander, presented the award at the Athens Post.

Mr. Ward risked his life to rescue the 17-year-old driver of a pickup truck that caught fire after a crash. The driver was trapped inside the truck after he traveled off state Route 664 and struck two trees. Mr. Ward freed him before the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

Mr. Ward, a corrections officer with the Ohio Department of Corrections, suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident and was treated at the Hocking Valley Community Hospital. The juvenile driver was transported via MedFlight to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries.

A Certificate of Recognition recognizes exemplary performance or acts by individuals who deserve special recognition by the Superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
