- On October 15, 2005, a rally involving members of the neo-Nazi
National Socialist Movement (NSM) turned into a riot when conflict
arose between NSM members and residents of a north Toledo neighborhood.
After Toledo Mayor Jack Ford requested assistance from Governor
Bob Taft, 50 Findlay District troopers, and 100 troopers overall,
responded to help restore order. Two months later, more than 100
troopers were part of a cooperative law enforcement response that
maintained order at a second NSM event.
- About 20 percent of troopers' enforcement contact included safety
belt enforcement. These efforts are vital as 45 percent of fatal
crash victims in the district during 2005 were not wearing safety
belts. According to quarterly surveys, the safety belt use rate
in northwest Ohio was around 80 percent.
- Troopers targeted aggressive driving violations with a particular
emphasis on failure to yield, which was the leading causative factor
in fatal crashes within the district (43 percent).
- Alcohol was also a significant factor in fatal crashes - 27 percent
in rural areas and more than 35 percent in metropolitan areas. Findlay
troopers arrested 2,682 impaired drivers in 2005 and participated
in four sobriety checkpoints.
- In support of the Patrol initiative to increase safety on routes
parallel to the Ohio Turnpike, troopers focused on commercial vehicle
safety. A 22 percent increase in commercial enforcement contributed
to commercial vehicle involvement in just 12 percent of fatal crashes
in the district.
- Findlay District troopers recovered 66 stolen vehicles and made
more than 160 felony arrests.
