Under the command of Captain Roger Hannay, the Ohio State Highway Patrol maintains posts specifically for patrolling the Ohio Turnpike in Swanton, Milan, and Hiram. Headquartered in Berea, District 10 also includes investigative offices in Cleveland.

Points of Interest

  • In 2005, the Ohio Turnpike's traffic fatality rate remained well below the Patrol's strategic goal of one per 100 million vehicle miles traveled with a year-end ratio of .4 traffic fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. Traffic fatalities fell 18 percent.
  • On September 8, 2004, the commercial vehicle speed limit on the Turnpike increased to 65 mph. In 2005, the new speed limit and reduced toll charges contributed to an increase of about 1.2 million commercial vehicles on the Turnpike, a 12 percent increase. The number of commercial involved crashes also increased with approximately 32 percent of all crashes involving a commercial vehicle. Of the 11 fatal crashes on the Turnpike in 2005, seven involved a commercial vehicle.
  • To hold truck speeds down, we increased our enforcement presence on the Turnpike utilizing overtime funded by the Turnpike Commission. The goal to hold average speeds of commercial vehicles below 70 mph was surpassed as troopers held average speeds of commercial vehicles to 67 mph.
  • Posts continued to "Partner for Safety" across the Ohio Turnpike. Troopers worked seven "No Zone" commercial vehicle safety programs with Wooster Motor Ways and Roadway Trucking Company at different service plazas during the summer months. Posts also continued relationships with Ohio Turnpike personnel that focused on enhancing safety on the Ohio Turnpike.
  • Cuyahoga County driver examination stations recorded 150,955 tests given at all locations.
