Problem Site Identification

Problem Site Identification, or PSI, involves gathering intelligence to operate specific enforcement applications in peak target areas.

A common application of a PSI operation is enforcement in an area in which there is a demonstratively high crash rate. Utilizing data gleaned from crash reports, specific crash-causing offenses and peak crash times are calculated. In this way, officers can target specific offenses in specific places during specific times.

One such Crash PSI operated on a highway leading to a factory employing thousands. A rash of serious crashes caused by failure to yield offenses were occurring at two intersections leading to the factory just before and after shift change times. Officers stationed themselves at the high-crash intersections during the dangerous times, watching for dangerous offenses. Through publicity, as well as the sight of a marked patrol car, compliance to traffic safety laws occurred without any significant enforcement action, and crashes during PSI times were eliminated.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol also operates Auto Larceny PSIs, Drug PSIs, DUI PSIs, and other, seasonal specialty PSIs to augment normal enforcement operations in areas demonstrating significant safety and/or crime problems.
